FAQs about Invisalign

What do Invisalign aligners look like?

Invisalign aligners look nothing like conventional metal braces. There are no archwires, brackets or rubber bands--only pairs of crystal clear appliances which snap over the top and bottom teeth. Customized to move your teeth, the thin aligners are removable, smooth and unnoticeable.

How can such a thin appliance move your teeth?

Aligners are made from patented SmartTrack acrylic according to special three-dimensional scans taken at Central Jersey Dental Arts in Piscataway. With these images and your dentist's instructions, the Invisalign lab technician crafts your aligner pairs--18 to 30 pairs in all, which you'll wear according to a specific sequence. The aligners exert measured forces on your teeth, and when worn 20 to 22 hours a day, your treatment plan stays on track.

What kinds of problems does Invisalign correct?

Except for very complex smile alignment issues, Invisalign can correct many kinds of orthodontic issues such as:

  • Improper dental bite (overbite and underbite, as examples)
    • Protruding front teeth
    • Crowding
    • Gaps
    • Tooth rotation and tipping

Also, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) states that straight teeth improve your overall health, avoiding jaw joint problems, extensive gum disease and tooth decay and of course, the embarrassment a less than perfect smile can cause.

Both teens and adults can qualify for treatment. Teen aligners may be equipped with special tabs to accommodate teeth not fully erupted.

Is treatment difficult?

No, it's not. Aligners are easy to care for, and you won't have to restrict what you eat. You may experience some soreness as you start your treatment plan, but overall, your mouth will feel good. Also, you can remove your appliances to eat, brush, and floss. Most Invisalign treatment plans finish up in about a year.

What happens when I finish my care plan?

You will have a beautiful, straight, functional and healthy smile. Your dentist may recommend you wear a retaining device (likely your last aligner pair) for a period of time to stabilize your teeth.
